When do students start adding more than two fractions with different denominators such as 2/7 + 1/2 + 2/3? Phil Daro’s video “Against Answer Getting” mentions that is a typical TIMSS question.
I’m going to go with 5th grade when we start adding fractions with unlike denominators. The standards don’t specify the number of fractions being added. Sounds like a great place to talk about not only adding fractions but also properties of operations. That’s a great video, btw. Everyone should see it. Twice.
