The CA trend over the last 10 years has been moving towards teaching Algebra in the 8th grade.  I believe 2/3 of 8th grade students statewide take Algebra 1.

That said, the Common Core Standards seem to shift content out of the Algebra 1 curriculum and into and 8th grade content.  This seems to encourage a reversal of the aforementioned trend.  With the adoption of CCSS in California, will more or less 8th graders be taking Algebra?  Should schools that currently teach ALL 8th graders Algebra be getting ready for a switch with Common Core, leaving Algebra for the 9th grade?

    Thanks,

I’m hoping a California reader with more knowledge of the current situation will chime in here. I did hear a California official say at a meeting a few months back that some commission was going to recommend moving to the Common Core which, as you say, has a fair amount of Algebra I in Grade 8, and has a carefully designed progression for getting students there.
