In working with Jr. School teachers on deconstructing the standards we spent way more time than expected discussing the standard 8.G.6 Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse. Our conversation revolved around what are the proofs that 8th graders might explore as this is there first experience with Pythagorean Theorum and they have no formal “proof” experience. Our conversation was so rich in talking about all the proofs presented by Pythagoras, but we were having trouble visualizing multiple ways that students might approach this being that it is their first experience.
