    When generating equivalent expressions in this standard, we understand that part of this concept could be combining like terms.  (It is much deeper than this we know, but this question is specifically regarding the combining of like terms).    The example shows that y + y + y and 3y are equivalent.  Would it also be appropriate in grade 6 to say that 5y – 2y and 3y are equivalent?

    This certainly seems reasonable to me.
