We’re working on a second grade standards-based report card in my district, and trying to assure that our expectations are in line with the intentions of the math standards. Is it the intention of 2.NBT.9 for students to “explain why addition and subtraction strategies work” verbally? In writing? Or both?

It could be either, I think. It would be a natural part of a classroom where students are talking about their reasoning and asking questions about others’ reasoning. Certainly no need to write an essay!
