I recently saw that a publisher had created some “animations” of the Math Practices to teach the children in every grade level what the practices look like in their grade level. The children can then check off when are using that practice. It made me wonder if it was a goal that the students be able to name/identify when they are engaged in a practice, or if the goal was to develop habits of thinking and ways of engaging in the work with their peers?’

This sounds awful. No, there is no goal that students be able to name the practices. The standards are not intended to be read by children, but rather by their teachers and those who design curriculum for children.
