    This standard asks students to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume. Can you tell me where surface area comes up before 6th Grade? I can’t find a reference in the Progressions. Thank you for your help.

    It doesn’t; Grade 6 is the first explicit mention of surface area. Notice this is in 6.G.4, not 6.G.1. Students use nets to find surface area.

    Another nice thing about the Standards is the way students are encouraged to use area models in lower grades. If the students have been using them in prior grades…examples at: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7405693/MEGSL/Progressions%20in%20Area%20Models%20for%20Tools.doc

    then surface area is easily connected to those.
